Sunday out of doors

Jemimah tells us that it wasn't a picnic because we ate fish and chips.  Apparently that is not in the official picnic foods list.  Oh well, never mind.  It tasted good, the weather was mighty fine and the company was perfect.  What more can one ask for in a Sunday outing?

We travelled the short distance to Mt Wycheproof, the world's smallest gazetted mountain in a circuitous route home from church today.  The autumnal weather has been so perfect this year (although the farmers are praying desperately for rain), that spending long periods outside is a must.

We had a wonderful time, and I thought I'd show you some of the photos. Just in case you want to see what we were up to.  It was just so beautiful.

Mt Wycheproof is known as a 'metamorphic boss' and is composed of granite from a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago.  Encased in the granite is a unique pearly orange quartz known as Wycheproofite.  The mineral was discovered by Bill Birch and students from La Trobe University in 1995, and is a hydrated sodium aluminium zirconium phosphate crystal. We spent some time examining rocks for the elusive crystal today, without success.

We were more successful at identifying a number of native plants, including this Acacia implexa, a wattle that is often found in these granite outcrops...

...and this pretty green correa, Correa glabra, in flower.

It was a lovely family day out, and we managed to walk off our fish and chips after a few hours outside.  It mightn't have qualified as a picnic in Jemimah's books, but even she was quick to admit that it was a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

What did you do this weekend?  Did you spend time out of doors as well?

  3. Beautiful scenery in your part of our amazing country! Isn't it ironic after all the rain we have had this year that part of Aus. are so dry. Prayers for rain for your farmers.

We were outside too- found a tiny box turtle, perhaps an inch and a bit long :)

  6. If you could see the itchy red lumps my dear sandfly friends have gifted me with, your Poirot skills would likely deduce I have been in the garden!

  7. I remember the beautiful garden you had around your pool. Is the new place smaller?

  8. What a wonderful way to spend your weekend. We had a few walks while we were at Bundaleer Forest. It really was a wonderful way to spend time together as a family.

  9. I love the photos. The landscape where you are is so different from the landscape where I live. In my books, a picnic is any meal or snack enjoyed en plein air. A loose definition, I know; but life is too short for strict guidelines about such things. ;-)

I'd love you to leave me a message. Tell me what you like - and what you don't. Just remember that this is what we do in our family - it doesn't have to be what you do in yours...
