St Pat's Day

Today we'll be:
  • Listening to Mary Black ;
  • Baking and eating Irish Soda Bread with lashings of butter and Lyle's Golden Syrup;
  • Reading about St Patrick in Trial and Triumph whilst munching on Allen's Lolly Snakes Alive;
  • Wearing green and shamrocks and pinching those who don't;
  • Drinking green champagne (big people) or green lemonade (small one);
  • Feasting on Beef and Guinness Stew with Irish Champ followed by Apple Duff smothered with whipped cream;
  • Reading Valley of the Wolves and How Cú Chulainn got his Name;
  • Planting sweet peas. (Where did this tradition come from, do you think? Do the flowers suffer if you plant them a day earlier or later?);
  • Drinking a toast to all of you, my friends:

    Saint Patrick was a gentleman,
    Who through strategy and stealth,
    Drove all the snakes from Ireland,
    Here’s a toasting to his health.
    But not too many toastings
    Lest you lose yourself and then
    Forget the good Saint Patrick
    And see all those snakes again.

    'Beannachtam na Feile Padraig!'
    Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Are any of you up to anything Irish today?

  1. Hi Jeanne,
    We're pretty boring in that respect :-/ We are doing the usual home educating and maybe we'll read about St. Patrick. It seems he's claimed by Roman Catholics and Protestants alike!
    My youngest brother & sister are celebrating their birthdays apart for the first time I think. My sister in Denmark with her new hubby and my brother in NZ with his new wife.
    I have been thinking of you a lot - hope your home is starting to feel normal again :-)

  2. Sounds good...no Irish celebrations here. We seem to be learning a whole lot about China in all our read alouds at the moment...very interesting!

    Happy St Patrick's Day none the less! xxx

  4. No Irish celebrations here, not with a Welsh husband and a Scottish mother and German grandparents!!!!! The soda bread does sound nice though.

  5. We also read about Patrick in Trial & Triumph today. We have few traditions re the day but that is one story we always look forward to. The boys made shamrocks to pin on themselves and we'll open a Guinness tonight once the bairns are in bed.
    x's and o's with no pinches.

  6. We are always Celtic here. ☺ And I know all about Cú Chulainn & his name. Poor chap came to a sad end. lol We don't celebrate paddy's day though. No drinkers,& we are up to our eyeballs in Liddy stuff. I am practising Christian charity ~ because so far I keep getting Fs.

  7. we went to mass in the morning and then had treats from the bakery for lunch.

    Tomorrow is the feast of St. Joseph so we will be doing something special for our baby Joseph.

I'd love you to leave me a message. Tell me what you like - and what you don't. Just remember that this is what we do in our family - it doesn't have to be what you do in yours...
