Saturday night at home

Don't you love Saturday night? We're snuggling in rugs by the fire watching Spirited Away and eating King Island Brie and Duck and Orange Pate and drinking bubbles. So nice.

Spirited Away was my first Hayao Miyazaki film, and it remains my very favourite. Do you know it? Here's a preview:

It is in the top ten of BFI's list of the 50 films you should see by the age of 14. This is their top 10 in alphabetical order:

  • Bicycle Thieves (1948)
  • E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)*
  • Kes (1969)*
  • The Night of the Hunter (1955)
  • The 400 Blows (1959)
  • Show Me Love (1998)
  • Spirited Away (2001)*
  • Toy Story (1995)*
  • Where is the Friend's Home? (1987)
  • The Wizard of Oz (1939)*
I've asterisked the ones I've seen. Which is your favourite?

  1. Night of the Hunter is one of the creepiest movies I've seen. Robert Mitchum is the perfect villian.

  2. And I would have though Kes was more an adult movie? Liked it but a mature 14yr old maybe....It's pretty dark. Bicycle Theives, is that the one based on a foreign book>? Interesting choices.

  3. Your Saturday night sounds perfect to me. Our ds9 watched ET recently and cried but loved it. He has enjoyed both the Wizard of of & Toy Story for many years now. He loves movies. I am so much more picky since home educating, doing this has opened our eyes to what/how our children learn. Love visiting your place Jeanne. Blessings, Renelle

  4. I think How's Moving Castle is another film he made, this one is beautiful to watch as well. I was introduced to this film maker by my son whom loves Japanese anime.

  7. Jeanne, my girls love Spirited Away! Yes, I love Saturday nights. When the girls were younger, it was my night to cozy up to the TV and watch Britcoms on my local public television station. Now that they're older, my tradition has fallen by the wayside somewhat...

  8. This list is perfect timing! Another mom and I were trying to come up with some good movies for our tween girls to watch, and our memories were pathetically feeble. I'll show off to her the next time I see her with this list...thanks!

  9. I've only seen one of these 10 (Toy Story) as a movie, as in sit down and watch the whole thing. I've seen bits and bobs of ET and Oz on telly. Toy Story is great, but our kids haven't watched it yet.
As for the list of 50 films... where is The Black Stallion?! Anyone?

I'd love you to leave me a message. Tell me what you like - and what you don't. Just remember that this is what we do in our family - it doesn't have to be what you do in yours...
