The Borrowers Afield for us as a bedtime read-aloud. Jemimah's reading Return to Gone-Away. I've just started 44 Scotland Street and finished Passing On. Hubby is half way through Scarpetta. Together the adults are reading A Song for Nagasaki: The Story of Takashi Nagai-Scientist, Convert, and Survivor of the Atomic Bomb.
Goodies in The Book Bag include: The Last Battle, The Penderwicks on Gardam Street, Justin Morgan had a Horse, The Family at Misrule and Johnny Tremain.
There is more than a smattering of classics in there. Maybe some future classics as well?

As a read-aloud we did "Raggedy Ann" . It is free on kindle, but if you want to see the illustrations go to Project Gutenberg.
ReplyDeleteAnyway our new cat has been bringing us presents-a mole, bird, mouse and bat. Just now ds found her outside with a live mole. Every time it reached the hole, the cat would drag it back. JUST like the cat inRaggedy Ann.
I have a Mary Higgins Clark book by my bed for light reading at night. Apart from that, I am reading blog posts and facebook. There maybe some classic posts on some of the blogs I am reading but I don't think there is any on facebook lol.

I'm in the middle of reading Holes to the kids - not a classic, but interesting nonetheless. I have been in a dry spell here, and kind of stalled in the middle of several different things, mostly non-fiction. Hubby is always reading some book about nuclear disaster these days. So not fun.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping to start The Keys of the Kingdom (Cronin) this weekend - if I can manage to finish Holes for the kids - they won't give me a minute's peace to read by myself until I do!
I love it when you post about books! I've taken many suggestions from the books mentioned in the posts and comments here, like the book I finished last night, Major Pettigrew's Last Stand. Not quite a future classic IMO, but some good characters. I'm also thoroughly enjoying my first reading of Watership Down - now that's a classic. :) Reading and re-reading and RE-READING The Very Hungry Caterpillar with DS. But that's a classic too, so all is well. Trying to get DD interested in Blinky Bill but at the moment she'd rather read about trains.
ReplyDeleteYeah for "44 Scotland Street" Patrick and I have listened to all of them and love them. I haven't read any of them in a print book--always the unabridged audio (diito "Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency" series. Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! for the Penderwicks and Gone Away Lake--two of Bethany's favorites (I love the Penderwicks too!)
