Daisy chains and simple things

Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do…So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.

Lewis Carroll Alice in Wonderland

She might be almost as tall as me, but I'm so glad that she's not too old for making daisy chains. It's one of those simple, peaceful things, isn't it, and I'm thankful that amongst the busyness of Christmas she had time today to have nothing to do.

Why don't you sit outside today for a bit and make a daisy chain, too?

  1. Fascinating - from a quick glance, I'd have said those were dandelions. Daisies here in the UK (and therefore probably in Alice in Wonderland) are smaller white flowers with yellow centres. I had no idea they were different in Australia, but since magpies are different birds in the two countries I shouldn't be surprised.

Alas, we have no daisies or dandelions at this time of year, but I will think of you making them into chains as I walk through the cold air to go to a Christmas fair. - May

  2. Ahem, these are dandelions. And yes, they're growing in our lawn. Dandelion chain doesn't sound as good as daisy chain though, does it?

  3. I said to my husband today "HOW it must be odd to have a summer Christmas?" But then my next comment was " with summer vacation instead of having school in December would be wonderful." Loved this post.

  4. Jeanne! such inaccuracy of plant identification on a CM blog! I hope you're ashamed!!

But I just love the idea of a daisy (or dandelion) chain on the Christmas tree! why have I never thought of that! Such a lovely *Summer* way to celebrate Christmas - I get very Scrooge-y about all the fake frost in shop windows and men dressing up in fur in the middle of Summer, so I love finding more seasonally appropriate ideas - especially when they're simple like this :)

I'd love you to leave me a message. Tell me what you like - and what you don't. Just remember that this is what we do in our family - it doesn't have to be what you do in yours...
